Napa Valley & Whistler Share a “Locals” Vibe on Wine

Locals make the difference in your wine experience in Whistler and in Napa!

Who knew that Napa Valley and Whistler would share such a strong vibe? Spending a few days there really showed me that it’s really the local people that make any wine experience special.

I recently returned from a trip to Napa Valley, and whether you love or hate the California wine scene, the valley is absolutely beautiful!

Aside from the scenic (and fascinating) geography, the people that I met made as much of a mark on me as the wines.

For example, there is the glamor and prestige effect that you find in Producers housed in castles like Opus One. Or the humility and hospitality of Dick Grace, who has, without a doubt ,one of the most prestigious wines in Napa, Grace Family Vineyards.

This is the first ever ‘cult Cabernet’ – so sought after it fetches extraordinary prices. The vineyard is literally his yard planted with vines, and yet he invited us into his home and sat with us at his dining room table to chat. A truly wonderful experience.

Another standout was a visit with Tom Leonardini of Whitehall Lane. A very down to earth, passionate, and welcoming person.

Tom loves wine, loves to surf, and and really shies away from the “big ego” that can come with some Napa wines. After visiting his winery, and tasting some stellar Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet, Tom actually joined us for dinner and shared a magnum of his 2009 Cab which was drinking perfectly!
I realize that visiting Napa wineries is a bit different when you’re in the wine trade, as opposed to being a regular consumer. But one of the key takeaways from this trip was the affirmation that great things are made greater by the caliber of the people involved – just like in Whistler!
